I wanted a set of matching stockings for our family, but I wanted to do it on the cheap. And I didn’t want to sew.
So I headed to A.C. Moore where I lucked out to find plain red and white felt stockings for $1 each (at a 50% off sale). I bought four of them for stockings and one extra to use as material for the monograms.
My inspiration came from OhMyHandmade.com who made these pretty stockings from scratch.
But with a slight modification to her excellent tutorial I figured a way to do it thread-free.
First, print out the letters you want in the size and typeface you like. I used OhMyGoodness.com‘s suggestion for Georgia font at 300 point. I settled on capital letters for the adults and lowercase for the boys.
Next, cut out the letter you printed and glue it face down on the felt color that you want to use as your primary monogram color. Use adhesive spray for this.
Next cut out that letter, leaving the paper glued to the felt.
Next I used the white top part of the stocking material for the letter’s outline. Use spray adhesive again, this time on the BACK of the felt letter (which is still the paper you printed out and stuck to it) and glue it right side up on your outline material. (In my case the outline material is white.)
For this next part I just eyeballed how thick of a white outline I wanted around my red letter and started right in cutting it with the scissors. These are regular old craft scissors by the way. Nothing fancy. I only used the fabric scissors to cut the big chunks of material out of the stocking I was using as fabric.
Once you’re finished cutting the white trim outline part, just spray the back of the letter (which is now white) and stick it to your stocking.
Next I ironed them and opened the center up a little so they weren’t so pancake flat.
So there’s your $1.25 stocking that hanging on the mantel looks pretty custom, if not designer, to me.
Would make a nice gift too, for a baby’s first Christmas or something…
